The law On Leaving Children Home Alone

The law doesn’t say an age when you can leave a child on their own, but it’s an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk. Use your judgement on how mature your child is before you decide to leave them alone, eg at home or in a car.

Click Here <<< for information from The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC)
  • children under 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time
  • children under 16 shouldn’t be left alone overnight
  • babies, toddlers and very young children should never be left alone
Parents can be prosecuted if they leave a child unsupervised ‘in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health

Are you driving in France? There are new rules on vehicle emissions

If you're planning to drive to or through France via Paris, Lyon or Grenoble, beware, new rules mean you're likely to need to display a vehicle emissions sticker on your windscreen, while older cars could be banned altogether at certain times.

The three French cities have introduced the 'Crit'Air' scheme, which is designed to curb pollution and requires most vehicles driving within designated 'environmental zones' to display a window sticker (known as avignette).
The stickers cost €4.80 (around £4.13), including postage to the UK. There are six categories of sticker, which are colour-coded according to how much vehicles pollute and range from the cleanest (Crit'Air 1), for electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles, to the most polluting (Crit'Air 6).

INCREASE IN STATE PENSION RETIREMENT AGE BROUGHT FORWARD

Six million people in their early 40s will have to work a year longer, as a result of a change in the State Pension Age, the government has announced.

The rise in the pension age to 68 will now happen in 2039, rather than in 2046 as was originally proposed.
Those affected are currently between the ages of 39 and 47.

Improved Access To Student Loans For Army Spouses And Partners

As of 1 August 2017, Army families posted overseas who wish to undertake a qualifying UK based university or college course can access a loan via Student Finance England. This applies to both full and part time courses, and you no longer need to be in the UK for the first day of the course to qualify.

For more information and full eligibility criteria, visit www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies
Last year, we were proud to publicise this AFF win, announced by the Universities Minister Jo Johnson, after much lobbying and joint working with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).

The change applies to new students starting a distance learning course in 2017/18 and also to those who have already started a distance learning course before and who are continuing that course in 2017/18.

Unfortunately, this does not apply to those from the devolved nations. To be eligible, you must qualify for the English student support package.

The Countdown Begins On Old Round Pound Coin

It's been three months since the Royal Mint introduced the 12-sided £1 coin into circulation - and now the old 'round pound' is on its way out.
The old pound will cease to be legal tender on October 15, 2017, although the Royal Mint is encouraging "people to use coins or return them to your bank” before then.
After this date, old coins can be exchanged or deposited into accounts at most high street banks including the Post Office.
But shops, restaurants and other businesses will not accept the old pound after the deadline.

AFF Achieves Housing Success On Behalf Of Army Families

AFF achieves housing success on behalf of Army families

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is celebrating a success for those living in Service Family Accommodation (SFA) who have recently faced unfair increases to their accommodation charge.
Many families contacted AFF to say their rental charge or final charge had unexpectedly increased by an unreasonable amount without proper notice and without a chance to appeal.
Fighting for families
On behalf of these families, AFF approached housing organisations Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) and CarillionAmey (CA) to push for a fair outcome in accordance with the original guidelines of the CAAS system. The original guidelines stated that rental increases would be implemented on a transitional basis and that any changes to the final charge as a result of a survey or data review would be able to be appealed within a contracted time scale.

Using Social Media - A Guide for Military Personnel

The use of social media is accepted by Defence and, when
used appropriately, should be encouraged.

The issue we face is not why or how we use social media, but how
well we use it.
The government has produced a useful guide that tells you what is
and isn’t acceptable social media behaviour for military personnel.
